Promises
Просмотров 133Год назад
The clouds always break and the storm rolls away, and a rainbow lifts our hearts, brightening the day. Rainbows are a promise that the sun is on the way. The grass lies waiting for another chance to grow as the bright Spring sunshine melts the winter snow. Spring is a promise that all the robins know. The flowers in the field, as they die and fade away, drop their seeds on fallow ground, to liv...

March threw down a gauntlet today. Weather so severe as to test the strength of any living thing. And in my yard, surrounded by sleet, hail and snow from the cauldrons of March, a crocus; stunning in its simple beauty and tenacity. If it can survive these meanest of conditions then I will study its ways so I too may grow beyond adversity. Written and recited by DeAnn Rasmussen © March 1992 All ...
Winter Repose
Просмотров 94Год назад
Like the gentle rabbit sitting huddled in the twilight, I send my heart out to lie in a bank of the soft, cool, clean new snow, to view the world from a quieter place. And there, with my eyes closed just enough to see things thru snow fringed lashes, I find that all the trees are covered with diamonds. I wonder, is it the snowflakes or the tears that make them sparkle so? 'Winter Repose', writt...

"Everyone who has put their life on the line for our country deserves to be thanked." Following is DeAnn Rasmussen’s story on how this poem came to be…. Tell me a Happy Story-This is One The Beads Know
Просмотров 264Год назад
At bedtime, when DeAnn's children were little, they always said, “Tell me a happy story”, when being tucked in for the night. Most of the time she would read to them, but sometimes they requested an original story. One particularly spectacular day on the lake, DeAnn crafted a special story to capture the beauty as it appeared to her. She then created a string of beads to hold those memories. St...

Through the symmetry of poetic words and nature photography, this is an homage to enduring love. In the early 80's, while alone and with time to be introspective, DeAnn Rasmussen started putting pencil to paper as she listened to the words of her heart. I have mixed emotions about this...thrilled to find such a valuable lesson and able to enjoy such a lovely paused and proud instruction filled with family tradition. Yet, sad because men like this, who had more integrity and propriety in one thumbnail than what others have in their entire body may be an endangered specie. I hope not, but agreeable persons like him are slowly fading away. I was lucky to be well raised and found men like him who mentored and served as good examples. Nonetheless, 20 virtual minutes with this gentleman and I already discovered that I am at a loss for not being able to make his acquaintance. I hope his children and grandchildren live nearby. It would be dreadful to have a grandfather like this and not be able to rejoice in his society. Mr. Lepak is certainly a treasure and perhaps one of his heirs will capture the pride and joy he displays creating his masterpiece and perpetuate the family tradition. God has been good to him and rightly so, it is evident he deserves all the blessings.

    I wonder how many people watch this video as their "how to" and end up grossly over tapping and killing their trees. This man is completely out to lunch in comparison to the do's and don't of tapping. Never have I seen double tapping where two holes are done above and below. But not only that, putting in far too many taps in total on trees nowhere near big enough. He has enough taps on some trees that wouldn't even be considered on a tree 6' wide... And his "boucing off with the hammer" may sound simple, he really doesn't prove anything. He's just going by general feel with his taps and then letting his hammer bounce off the tap like a drummer using his stick. This bounce effect can be purposely done with little hits, or hard hits... There's no feel for when the hammer really bounces off. You just need to use common sense, right size drill bit (with very straight pressure to not oval the hole) and not hammer excessively.

    • @theacornmama
      @theacornmama 4 года назад

      Here is Cy's response to your tapping concern... "A commercial producer visits me at the beginning of each season to commiserate and share stories about farming, steam engines, and the wonderful smell of draft horses. This man scolds me about over tapping as well. I tapped the same trees the first 16 years of sugaring, then acquired another maple forest so that now I tap each tree no more than once every five years. During 48 years of syruping I have lost only one sugar maple. Its top was broken off in a storm. I salvaged the trunk and rendered it into lumber with which I built two blanket chests, one for a bride, and one for my brother/helper, showing the tap holes. A wood carver created several exquisitely beautiful bowls with the tap holes as well. I saw a sugar maple in Vermont with 24 taps in its circumference that had been tapped for two centuries. I assumed the owner was just showing off."
